Travis Sanheim signed an eight-year, $50 million contract with the Philadelphia Flyers on Thursday. It has an average annual value of $6.25 million.

The 26-year-old defenseman, who is in the final season of a two-year contract he signed with Philadelphia on Aug. 21, 2021, could have become an unrestricted free agent after this season. He had 31 points (seven goals, 24 assists) in 80 games last season.

"Obviously, super thrilled and appreciative of [the Flyers] being able to extend me for that long," Sanheim said after Philadelphia's 5-2 season-opening win against the New Jersey Devils. "On my last deal, I was able to have that in that I could be walking to UFA. I'm happy that we were able to work something out. Happy to be here for another eight years. I love it here. Love the group here, love the organization, the fans, the city, so everything just added up. Me and Chuck [Fletcher] talked at the end of last season that it was a priority to get something done in the offseason, and he stuck with his word, and I'm happy to get the extension."

Selected by Philadelphia with the No. 17 pick in the 2014 NHL Draft, Sanheim has 116 points (29 goals, 87 assists) in 335 regular-season games and eight points (two goals, six assists) in 20 Stanley Cup Playoff games.

"We're extremely happy to have Travis under long-term contract and see him as a key piece of our team's future," Flyers general manager Chuck Fletcher said. "Travis has improved each season to become a highly reliable player and key contributor on our blueline. Furthermore, he is someone who has developed his entire career with us and has grown into a valuable leader for our team."
